District given Magna Award
April 3, 2008
The Blue Springs School District has been named an honorable mention winner in the American School Board Journal’s 14th annual Magna Awards program. The district was honored in the 5,000 to 20,000 enrollment category for “Reading In the Blue,” which accelerates student learning through comprehensive reading instruction and support, including differentiated teacher professional development, accountability for implementation and student achievement, and focused involvement of the community. Results from the primary grade assessments show more than 95 percent of kindergarten students scored “proficient” in sound identification and there was a seven percent increase in second grade students “proficiency” on the DIBELS test, which measures early literacy development. The Magna Awards recognize districts across the country for programs that advance student learning and encourage community involvement. The American School Board Journal initiated the Magna Awards in 1995.
