MRMS student recognized for volunteerism
April 3, 2008
Nicholas Mozer, an eighth-grade student at Moreland Ridge Middle School, was awarded the Foundation of Leadership Award by the Board. Nicholas was one of two Missouri students to receive the Prudential Spirit of Caring Award, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism. Nicholas and his family raised more than $175,000 for pediatric cancer research the past four years by operating lemonade stands throughout the area. Nicholas’ brother, Jacob, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma when he was a baby. Nicholas’ family started selling lemonade after learning about Alex Scott, a young cancer patient who began a nationwide network of Alex’s Lemonade Stands. Nicholas sells and serves lemonade each year, but also assists in recruiting volunteers to run the family’s 24 lemonade stands over a period of two days. This year’s fundraiser will be June 6-7 at area Hy-Vee stores. Nicholas also maintains a Web site and helps publicize his lemonade stands. As a Spirit of Caring Award winner, Nicholas will receive $1,000, an engraved medallion and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. in May. Nicholas was honored by Prudential representative Emily Bernhardy.
