What's in a name?
April 3, 2008
Thanks to John Nowlin Elementary kindergartner Wyatt Atwood, a bull elk at Fleming Park will no longer have to answer to the name M-230. Atwood, in a contest to name the latest elk to join the group at the Native Hooved Animal Enclosure at Fleming Park, took the top prize and dubbed the elk Bull’s Eye. Atwood, a member of Mrs. Amy McDonald’s class, was one of five finalists from a field of more than 200 entries from students grade K-5 in Jackson County schools. His winning name was a unanimous choice by the contest’s panel of six judges, earning the bull elk a new moniker and Wyatt and his classmates an assembly that included a visit from Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders, a plaque and a personal tour of the animal enclosure.
